1989 The Deaf Way One "Misconceptions of Deaf Culture
in the Media and the Arts." Two speakers, Doug Aker and Gunilla Wagstrom Lunqvis, whom will provide a presentation on the misconceptions of deaf culture that the hearing people provide to others through the media and art. Doug Aker shares about how the reporters of different newspapers usually do not speak directly to a deaf person, receiving wrong information from either a child or a stranger who does not know the deaf person. Doug mentions a book “Hollywood Speaks,” written by John Schuchmann in which tells of how hearing people do discriminate against the deaf via the media. Gunilla Lunqvis divulged what she learned from her studies in a class room full of deaf children, what deaf people in Sweden expects, and curriculum of their schools.
