VL2 11/6/08 Pollick Gestures and Multimodal Signaling in Bonobos and Chimpanzees
Dr. Pollick, Director of Government Relations of Association for Psychological Sciences, will discuss gestures and multimodal communication in great apes based on her research work.
Great ape communication is complex and flexible yet research has yet research has largely been focused on vocalization and facial expressions in our closest living relatives, instead of on gestures. Results suggest that manual gestures are less tied to behavorial context than facial and vocal signals are, and thus may be more evolutionary recent signals. This presentation will include descriptions of gestures used by bonobos and chimpanzees in their everyday lives.
